Estimates only. Real costs depend on your appliance, how you use it and your tariff. See how we calculate.

    How to use the calculator

    1. Choose your country. The calculator starts with the US average (18.2¢ per kWh) or the UK price cap (26.32p per kWh).
    2. Pick an appliance or choose “Other appliance” and type its watts from the label.
    3. Set the hours a day and days a month you actually use it. For appliances that cycle on and off, such as fridges or heaters with thermostats, use the time it is really running.
    4. Use your own rate if you know it: divide your bill total by the kWh used, or read the unit rate on your bill.
    5. Add it to your monthly estimate and repeat for other appliances to see which ones dominate.

    The formula

Cost = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × price per kWh. A 1,500 W heater for 8 hours uses 12 kWh: $2.18 in the US or £3.16 in the UK at the default rates.

    What the estimate leaves out

Fixed charges (such as the UK standing charge, which you can add to the monthly estimate), time-of-use or tiered pricing, and taxes not already in the average rate. Full details in our methodology.
