About

PlugPenny tells you what your appliances really cost to run, in dollars and in pounds, and which changes actually lower an electricity bill. Every figure on the site shows where it comes from: an official rate, a manufacturer rating or, where marked, our own meter reading.

Why this site exists

Electricity prices have climbed on both sides of the Atlantic, and most advice on cutting bills is either vague or selling something. We wanted straight answers: how much a space heater, a tumble dryer or an EV charger costs per hour, per month and per year, calculated transparently from official rates and published appliance data.

Who writes the content

Daniel Moreno Terreros, founder and editor

Daniel Moreno Terreros is the founder and editor of PlugPenny. He is studying for a higher vocational qualification in computer systems and telecommunications in Spain. He researches what household appliances really cost to run in the United States and the United Kingdom, works out every figure from official EIA and Ofgem electricity rates, and keeps the numbers on the site up to date. Daniel Moreno Terreros writes and updates the cost guides, runs our measurements and maintains the calculators.

How we work

  • We say when we measured. When we test an appliance ourselves with a plug-in energy meter, the article says so and shows a photo of the reading. Everything else comes from official rates and manufacturer data, and we label it that way.
  • We use official rates. US costs use the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) average residential price; UK costs use the Ofgem energy price cap. Both are updated when the official figures change.
  • We show our working. Every cost guide includes the formula and the inputs used. Our methodology explains it in full.
  • We correct mistakes quickly. If you spot an error, tell us. We fix confirmed errors and note significant corrections on the page.
  • We stay independent. We earn money from ads and affiliate links, never from placement fees. Read our Affiliate Disclosure.

What we do not do

  • We do not give electrical installation advice. Wiring and fixed installations need a qualified professional.
  • We are not an energy supplier or a tariff comparison service, and we do not sell your data.
