PlugPenny exists to give accurate, transparent answers about what household energy costs. These are the rules every article follows.
Accuracy
- Every cost is calculated from a stated rate and a stated wattage, and the formula is shown on the page or in our methodology.
- Rates come from official sources: the U.S. Energy Information Administration for US prices and Ofgem for UK prices.
- Figures are recalculated in a spreadsheet before publication and checked against at least two sources for wattage.
- We say clearly whether a figure is measured by us, published by a manufacturer or official body, or a typical estimate.
Measurements
When an article says “we measured”, we tested the appliance ourselves with a plug-in energy meter and publish a photo of the reading, the date and the conditions. We never present estimates as measurements.
Use of AI tools
We may use AI tools to help draft or edit text. A person checks every figure, adds our own measurements and experience, and is responsible for everything we publish. We do not publish unreviewed AI output.
Updates
- UK figures are updated when the Ofgem price cap changes each quarter; US figures are reviewed every quarter.
- The “last updated” date changes only when we actually review or change the content.
Corrections
If you spot an error, contact us with the page address. We check every report. Confirmed errors are fixed promptly, and when a correction changes a conclusion or a key figure, we add a note at the end of the article explaining what changed and when.
Independence
We earn money from advertising and affiliate links. Advertisers and retailers have no say over what we write, and we never accept payment for rankings or reviews. Details in our Affiliate Disclosure.
Safety
We do not publish instructions for electrical installation or repair. Anything involving wiring or fixed appliances should be done by a qualified, licensed professional.
