Affiliate Disclosure

Last updated: 12 October 2026

PlugPenny is free to read. We pay for research, measuring equipment and expert reviews through advertising and affiliate commissions. This page explains how that works, so you can judge our recommendations with full information.

How we earn money

  • Advertising. We show ads served by Google AdSense. Ads are labelled “Advertisement”. Advertisers do not choose, review or influence our articles.
  • Affiliate links. Some links to products and services are affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, we may earn a commission from the retailer. The price you pay is the same.

How you can recognise affiliate links

  • Every article that contains affiliate links shows a short disclosure near the top, before the first affiliate link.
  • Product boxes and buttons that lead to a retailer are affiliate links unless we say otherwise.

Our editorial rules

  • We decide what to cover and recommend before checking whether an affiliate program exists.
  • We recommend products on running cost, measured or published energy use, reliability and value. A higher commission never changes a ranking.
  • We do not accept payment for placement in our lists or for positive reviews.
  • When we say we tested or measured a product, we did. When a figure comes from the manufacturer or ENERGY STAR, we say so.
  • If a brand gives us a product for free, we say so in the article. The brand does not see the article before publication.
  • Paid or sponsored content, if we ever publish it, will be labelled “Sponsored” or “Ad” at the top of the page.

Rules we follow

We follow the US Federal Trade Commission’s Endorsement Guides and, for UK readers, the UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising (CAP Code) enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority, together with the Competition and Markets Authority’s guidance on online reviews and endorsements.
